While collaborating on finishing the website for Solidarity Infrastructures, one of the last things I did was create a ProcessWire module to automate adding alt text to all the images in a website using the Open AI API, called AltTextGpt.

Many, or even most, uses of LMs may end up being against the ends of Solidarity Infrastructures, but I generally follow the first principle of Disability Driven Development:

There is no “right answer”, DDD takes a situated approach to development, with care for specific needs and wishes in specific contexts.

If there was a feature to be given up, in order to avoid using a wasteful infrastructure, it would not be alt text.

In future versions of the class I might prompt students to write alt-text for the images in their final projects up front, to avoid this moment of having 200 images without alt text for a website already behind the deadline to share it, but to me, this multi-layered entangled somewhat paradoxical final touch to the website in its own way felt fitting.
